Womans Basketball Shoes Biography

Thirty years ago my first basketball shoe had such a hard and stiff sole that before I could break it in, my toe had come through the canvas upper. Granted, I would probably not have had this experience with today's leather uppers. However, the better news is that the soles have softened-up for us women.

Today's basketball shoes come in many fancy colors and especially funky looking heels -- really, really high heels (okay, high heel and basketball are two things that were never meant to be put together, so let's refer to the heel as the midsole). The latest research for men (!) players is that they need a ton of cushioning for when they land from an above-the-rim type jump, such as a rebound or dunk. Now, I have been following the NCAA March Madness (men's and women's) and the average male player probably has a vertical jump of 42" -- that guy needs a ton of cushioning for his landing. Chances are that you, or most women, don't jump as high. So if you are wearing a shoe with a really high, cushioned heel, you may not need all that cushioning that cost ya an arm and a leg, and your ankle is now sitting higher off the ground.  This means that your ankle has a higher distance from which to roll if you, say, step on someone's foot (my teammate did that last year and it took her about 6 months to heal). I say, stay closer to mother earth and look for shoes that have a midsole that you sit in, rather than on.

Now that you have avoided the high midsole, let's look at the stitching (no, really!) You want a lot of stitching around the forefoot to support all that lateral movement you will be doing playin' defense. The more stitching the better. However, we looked at some top models and they now are hiding the stitching inside. If you don't see a lot of stitching, look for something providing lateral support, such as an all in one piece of molded plastic.

Design Basketball Shoes Biography

That’s how this all started. Katz played basketball seriously from high school through his freshman year of college, and he continued to dabble in the sport through his medical school graduation in ’82 and beyond. During that time, he had a series of ankle sprains. "They were bad sprains," he recalls. One benched him for three months. And as he went through medical school and became a diagnostic radiologist, he continued to think about ankle sprains in a very analytical way.
He hit the books and talked to experts, and he learned a number of things: that a sprained ankle is the most common orthopedic injury (fully 25% of the cases that limp into an orthopedist’s office); that 42% of all basketball injuries are sprained ankles; that there are 9 million ankle sprains per year in the U.S., and over 100 ankle sprains per year in the NBA alone (that’s one out of every three players). "This is a big problem," he says.
As he studied the problem more, he began to realize that sprains are in large part caused by shoes. It’s simple geometry: you have to invert your foot to about 60 degrees to cause a sprain. Barefoot, it’s tough to invert your foot more than 20 degrees. But the way the forces work out, a shoed foot can invert to almost 90 degrees. He asked around, and indeed, podiatrists he talked to confirmed that there was practically no such thing as an ankle sprain incurred while barefoot.
Katz teamed up with an orthopedic surgeon and a podiatrist to devise a way to better secure a basketball shoe to a foot, filing a patent. Then, in 2010, after a trip through business school Ektio, a new brand of basketball shoes, was formed.
The two key features of Ektio shoes are what Katz describes as an "internal brace-slash-tape mechanism" that’s built into the wall of the shoe; this keeps the shoe secured to the foot. On top of that, the shoes feature what Katz calls "outriggers," or little bumper-like features outside of the shoe near the sole, for added stability.
With descriptions like that, I put to Katz the obvious question. Basketball shoes are almost fetishized fashion objects, with cults of "sneakerheads" hunting for the coolest ones. Meanwhile, orthopedic shoes are just about the least cool thing possible.
"We have to thread the needle," acknowledges Katz. But mainly, for the time being, he doesn’t see himself as a competitor to Nike, nor does he expect to unseat Air Jordans anytime soon. Though he’s gotten NBA players to try out his shoes, the NBA and even the NCAA are already so commerce-driven, he says, that no player is likely to wear his shoes. The closest thing Katz has to a celebrity endorsement is a partnership with SlamBall, the stunt sport league that answers the question, "What do you get when you mix trampolines with basketball?" (Ankle sprains, mostly, was the answer, pre-Ektio.)
There’s a much bigger market, he points out, of casual basketball players who simply don’t want to roll their ankles. Katz and co. have initially gotten the word out through ads on ESPN Radio and by approaching doctors at conventions; Ektio also sells at tournaments. Word of mouth has been sufficient to create a growing business; Katz has just sold his 15,000th pair of shoes, including at stores in Europe, Canada, and Japan. A new design of the shoe, "The Barricade," is forthcoming this fall.
Most importantly for Katz, he says his customers are very happy, and that "we’ve virtually eliminated ankle sprains in people that wear our shoe," a claim he backs up with a clinical study performed at Drexel University.
Despite the modest initial aims, does Katz think he could ever make inroads against Nike, which he says owns 95% of the basketball shoe market? Katz says he’d be more than happy to license his technology to Nike or other brands, and is seeking partnerships with manufacturers of hiking boots, military boots, construction boots, and other kinds of performance footwear. He also does think that while he's not likely to steal Nike's crown, he could capture 5% to 10% of that market share by waking people up to the problem of ankle sprains and what he believes is the solution: Ektio.
"The technology is so new and so different," says Katz. "People have just accepted that ankle sprains are a part of life. We’re on an educational crusade to show you don’t have to have ankle sprains."

On this date in 1992, the most dominant basketball team ever assembled (and Christian Laettner) defeated Croatia 117-85 to win the Olympic gold medal in Barcelona.
Somewhat of a sports enigma, the Dream Team defeated its opponents by an average of nearly 44 points en route to gold. The showcase of 11 Hall of Famers changed the way the world viewed the game, leading to the influx of international talent that we see in today's NBA.
Celebrating the Dream Team's golden anniversary, we're taking a look back at the best
USA Basketball kicks to ever hit the court during international play — and you can bet the '92 team is well represented. Scroll through and let us know which patriotic sneakers are your favorite.Considering that most of our last Olympic team wore these (as well as many on the rosters of other countries), they had to make it into the list.  The original Hyperdunk from 2008 will go down as one of the all-time classic Nike basketball shoes whether the USA team wore them or not.  Throw in the infamous Coach K. adidas-blocking pose in the official team photo, and the Hyperdunk becomes even a little more legendary.Shaquille O'Neal helped lead the 1996 USA team to the Gold in Atlanta while wearing the beastly Preacher from Reebok.  One of the last Reebok models for Shaq, the Preacher was big and bad with lots of visible Hexalite.  Whether all of that Hexalite did anything is debatable, but it did look cool while he dominated the international paint.Ironically, both the tallest and shortest player on the Dream Team wore the same shoes.  That shoe was the Ballistic Force, which saw its best colorway during the 1992 Olympics.  The Ballistic Force was a standard FORCE shoe from 1992 in bland, mostly-white team colorways, but Nike did a special USA version with excellent color blocking of white and navy with gold accents.  A lot of shoe nerds (or maybe just me) wished these would have came back with the recent USA retro pack. Instead of opting for his Flight Ones, Penny got a customized #6 version of the classic Zoom Flight for the 1996 Olympics. Again, a lot of us would have liked to see these released with the recent USA retro pack. There's always 2016...Especially with the recent retro, everybody knows what these are.  When the world saw Ray and Vin wearing these in the 2000 Olympics, many sneakerheads were quickly in search of their own pair.Known as the Flightposite II or Flightposite KG, it's one of the best models from Nike Basketball in the year 2000.  The white and blue gradient colorway KG wore for the Olympics was already great enough, but then he broke out a golden pair for the Gold Medal game. The shoe alone would be farther down, or maybe not make the list at all, but it's what Vince Carter did in the shoes that make them legendary.  In possibly the most famous dunk of all time, VC lept OVER 7'2" French Center Frederic Weiss while wearing this shoe.  And that's why they're #4.
It was hard not to put this shoe even higher on the list, but the next two shoes narrowly edge it out.  Barkley's Air Force 180 is one of the best basketball shoes of the early 90's and the Olympic colorway is the best of them all.  With Nike's biggest visible Air unit to date and mid-foot strap, the Air Force 180 was primed and ready for the all-time greatest basketball team's leading scorer.
As if the Air More Uptempo wasn't bold enough with full length Air Max and giant "AIR" lettering plastered on the shoe, Nike made it even more noticeable with the color blocking for Scottie Pippen's Olympic pair.  Much to our delight, Nike blessed us with a retro this summer, complete with Scottie's #8 on the heels.  It may be the overall most memorable Olympic shoe as far as design, but it's not quite the best...
As you may have guessed from the start, the number one spot goes to the Olympic Air Jordan VII.  It would be hard not to put the shoe worn by the greatest player on the greatest team of all time at #1.  Michael's Air Jordan VII got the Olympic treatment with a white, navy, red, silver and gold colorway.  It would be the only silver the Dream Team would see that summer.
